Zola Jesus: Store Open [Nov. 9th, 2009|10:11 am]

warren_ellis

THE SPOILS by Zola Jesus is one of my favourite albums of this year.  But it’s kind of hard to find on CD.  (The mp3 download is easy to find, I’ve even seen it on Amazon, and got mine at eMusic.)  But now there’s a store open at zolajesus.com, where you can buy it, her other records, and a t-shirt that I’m going to pick up for Lili.

Nick Barrucci from Dynamite Comics asked me to do him the favour of posting this. This seems like an entirely worthy charity, well deserving of your investigation:

Saved Whiskers Rescue Organization, Inc. announced today that world renowned painter Alex Ross has donated an original piece of classic Catwoman art to Saved Whiskers Rescue Organization, Inc. (S.W.R.O.). The piece was created exclusively for Saved Whiskers Rescue Organization to raise money to help rescue animals. The piece will be auctioned through Ebay at the following URL: eBayISAPI.dll-ViewItem&item=250524615645 . The piece is signed by Alex Ross and measures 10.75 inches wide by 23 inches tall and has never been seen anywhere…

T-shirt Of The Week 003: FUCKABLE ZOMBIE [Nov. 9th, 2009|08:44 am]

warren_ellis

TOTW is basically a joke that Ariana and I pull each week in our joint guise as the International Electrophonic Unit. Basically, we take some of the stupider things I’ve said on Twitter and elsewhere, often in a state of extreme alcoholic refreshment or severe sleep deprivation, and put them on a t-shirt. Ariana set up a Cafe Press store (because this is a joke and engaging with a serious maker of t-shirts would be less funny to us), and… well, once a week, here we are.

Through this website and this Cafe Press store, we’re going to release one t-shirt a week. It’ll go live on Monday… and it’ll die Sunday night — midnight UK time, more often than not. Each one lives for a week, and then it’s replaced by the next week’s shirt. Until I either run out of dumb ideas or Ariana’s brain explodes.

So, every Monday, I’ll post the new shirt here, and you can peer at it more at http://www.cafepress.com/electrophonic.

Anyway. I present to you T-Shirt Of The Week #003: FUCKABLE ZOMBIE:

4089952276_87bcac06a9_o

We also offer a couple of perennial items. Mostly because I wanted one of these for myself:

413653507v10_480x480_Front

(And also a MAN COOK MEAT WITH FIRE "splatter-shield", because Ariana’s crazy)

Thank you for your kind attention.

Dragon Age: Origins [Nov. 9th, 2009|08:56 am]

untoward
Dragon Age: Origins is a game I've been excited about for more than a year. I loved Baldur's Gate II, and its expansion, and I lost more time to Neverwinter Nights than I ought to admit. So a new single player fantasy RPG by this company, billed as the "spiritual heir to baldur's gate" (spiritual because this new one is their own IP, and not a D&D game - though the mechanics are very similar) got me all giddy with anticipation!

And it's great. I've been having a really good time playing it. It isn't without it's flaws, but the overall experience is good enough that I've been all too happy to overlook the frustrating bugs. The onion AV Club gave it an A though, which I'm not sure I agree with entirely. I wrote a big comment on that AV Club review. And here it is!

The bugs in this game are frustrating.

The two big ones are:

- Quests that don't register their completion can leave you running around an area in frustration after fighting, say, the hordes of bad guys in the Redcliffe castle mission, wondering what small thing you haven't yet done. Only looking on the internet led me to the conclusion that something had gone wrong on their end. Reloaded a save game, fought the battle again, and CLICK - cut scene. Also, it didn't help that while I was trying to figure out what was going on, the aggravating fight scene music kept playing! It's great and cinematic when actually fighting, but while running around in empty areas trying to figure out what to do, it sure adds to the frustration!

- cut scenes sometimes screw up, and you'll go through a cut scene, make one of the games (actually pretty interesting) moral choices, and then suddenly be watching the cut scene again. I chose a different choice the second time, and was then moved forward in the game as though I'd only chosen the first. Later, other characters alternated between acting as though I'd chosen A or B. It sort of took the wind out of that choice. This happened to me in the Redcliffe section, as well.

That said, The game has some very good things in its favour, too:

- the moral choices themselves feel more satisfying. I really like the game's system of having the choices affect the world itself, rather than some arbitrary slider of how good or evil you are. You make a choice, and your companions approve or disapprove, sure, but also you'll find that your future options in the game world have changed, too. It really adds to a sense of immersion.

- The combat's good. Not too simple, but not ridiculously complex either, and the tactics reward the learning curve that comes with understanding how they're interpreted by the game. After playing with the tactic programming for a while, I found my party members acting just how I needed, which was useful for adapting to harder fights and made the combat feel genuinely tactical rather than like a mashfest.

- Some of the characterization is great - Morrigan and Shale are both fun and interesting, and I like the way they fit into the game world, and the major events of the game, rather than just having discreet stories of their own. Some of the characterization is sort of lame, too though. (The voice acting also runs from very very good to characters who seem to change voice actors mid-dialogue, again, in the Redcliffe quest, which led me to have most of my doubts about the game. Maybe the people in charge of the Redcliffe quest

- The skill trees feel well balanced, and it's fun to play as a warrior or mage or rogue (except for some rogue dex issues that they've acknowledged and which are being fixed in an upcoming patch) and for the most part the specializations really give a different feel to your class when you get to that stage. And a couple of the specializations are tied to the game world in a fun way. In a lot of these games, specializations just add a couple generic skills. Extra damage, and such. In this, they add skills that tie into the story sometimes. "Blood magic" being a big one, and that sort of detail really adds to the feel that you're a part of the game.

- The game gets its title from a system where you can choose your "origin" - each of which is a different way to start the game. The origins are a couple hours, before merging with the main storyline, but which will affect the game further down the line, too. Every character has to go to the dawrven city to seek aid, for instance, but that visit has a very different tone if you are a dwarf noble who was falsely accused of killing her brother the heir to the throne and then exiled.

I would give it a B, or a B- (with it moving to an A after a bug patch or two for sure.) A lot of care and love went into the game, and despite the couple frustrating bugs above, I've put in a couple dozen hours since it's release and haven't lost interest yet!

Penny Arcade had a pretty funny comic about how they do downloadable content. There are characters you come across IN-GAME, who describe the DLC for you, and the dialogue options say "downloadable content" right on them, which takes you out of the game a bit. ( I have, of course, downloaded them )

Have you played it? What do you think?

Wagering Your Economic Future [Nov. 9th, 2009|08:30 am]

politicsforum

[brucenstein]
In August I made a bet with [info]meus_ovatio that unemployment would hit 10% by year's end. As of October it was 10.2%, so I am formally asking Mr. Ovatio to grant me one last concession in that I am changing my charity-of-choice once again and have settled upon the Central Illinois Food Bank. I encourage anyone else to seek out local food banks of their own, as the portent of higher unemployment can only mean a greater need for such services.

The bet technically said that we used the next month revised figures, as the initial figures are somewhat shaky, so I'm more than willing to wait another 30 days. However, I think it's apparent that the figures won't be revised .3% downward, so I'm asking that the bet be paid now.

This brings up interesting questions, however, in that in the time since I made that bet (08/07/09) we've seen the DOW Jump almost 700 points from 9,370 to its current 10,023 (hitting 10,092 on its October 19th high). We've also seen gold go from $955/oz to what will most surely be at or above $1,100 today. That's a 15% return in 3 months for those counting.

My point with this is that I think the situation today is similar to the situation in August when I made that bet, and perhaps even more so: people underestimate the fundamental nature of this economic downturn. And fundamentals are exactly what's the problem. Yet, if you're looking at the stock index numbers - which are still lower than the equivalent numbers in 2000 once you factor in inflation, mind - you're seeing what is supposedly wealth generation.

My thought is that this is bupkiss. Sure, there are situations where stocks will rise, and there are some stocks that are undervalued. There's ALWAYS money to be made in the stock market with the right picks. But I certainly do not see any sort of "recovery" on the horizon; at the very most I see a flattening of the line, and I'm not even optimistic about that.

The unemployment rate is most certainly a driving factor of this. And when you realize that the 10.2% is the U-3 number and not U-6 (U-6 including "marginal" workers and similar), which stands at 17.5% currently, and which has been outpacing U-3, then you get a much different picture of the future. Add into that the holidays right around the corner which already had an abysmal showing the past year and....

Thankfully, I'm not an efficient market theory advocate or else none of this would make sense. In fact, I think people are largely irrational and that the market naturally reflects this. This is especially true when it comes to money and the pursuit thereof. In short, this supposed turn-of-the-corner and soon-to-be prosperity is, once again, bupkiss. I could be wrong, but I trust in the fundamentals, and the fundamentals say bupkiss.

I don't think my interpretation of current information is wrong, in fact I see it hard to interpret it otherwise. I see merely a tiny peak before another dip, little more. But that's the question I pose to you - if you think I'm wrong, what sort of information do you have that I'm missing? Is this actually the beginning steps to a long uphill battle?

I trust in fundamentals, and I don't see them being wrong any time soon. High unemployment and high commodity prices = bad. It's a fairly simple formula and I'm not sure it's ever been wrong. So I'm putting this out there for anyone who thinks I'm just a jaded free marketeer who sits in his basement lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills while lamenting anti-trust laws - I offer you the chance to challenge me and my fundamentals. I am willing to wager, with donations to charity, upon any number of other things. For example, I think the DOW will be 9,000 or below by the end of Jan 2010, and 8,800 or below by February. I also think unemployment will peak at the end of this year at about 10.5% - 10.7%, with it hitting 11% easily by Feb.

If you think otherwise, I (and the Central Illinois Food Bank) encourages your future support.

Now, each bet is separate, so don't think that my putting things out here constitutes an immediate agreement with one or any of you; if you wish to wager respond with the terms and we will discuss. Depending on the consideration involved, time period, etc. I may want to alter terms and/or predictions.

The "ladyboys" of Brunei [Nov. 9th, 2009|10:08 pm]

mananath
Turning the corner from the internet cafe to my hotel I first noticed a pair of long, long legs across the street from me. What struck me as funny was that they were exposed legs leading up to a very short, even by American standards, skirt. She looked over at me as I walked on the other side of the street and even though she was talking on the phone she used one hand to wave at me. Not expecting a pretty young girl to wave at me I had a bit of a delayed reaction before I finally returned the wave. But I didn't stop, I just kept walking even as she said something to me from across the way. Before I entered my hotel I turned around for one more glance at her and as I did she curled her hand into a loose fist and moved it towards and away from her mouth, in a seductive motion. The universal sign for a blowjob. Then it hit me. She was a prostitute.

I had never seen a prostitute before, as baffling as that might sound. Walking up the steps to my room I tossed that idea around in my head and couldn't believe that my first glimpse of a prostitute was in a conservative, muslim country. What were the chances? Who knew? And who knew she would be so open about it.

A short while afterwards the two english guys I had been hanging out with returned to the room and I immediately beckoned them over to the window that overlooked the girl's corner. Before they got there they said "Prostitutes? Yea we saw them walking although they looked a little masculine." AHHHHH.... We were all intrigued now and ended up sitting in front of the window watching them (a second had arrived). Our eyes turned critical towards them as we went back and forth: "male? female?".

Our attention didn't go unnoticed and soon they were motioning us with their hands, giving us the old BJ signal and flashing us (though they still wore a bra). We chuckled, laughed and one of the guys I was with flashed them back. But still... we weren't sure. They were obviously both very attractive but....

Finally we gave up and went out to the night watchmen for the hotel and asked him what the deal was with them. He confirmed that they were in fact men and then asked us if we wanted to choose. Shortly after we watched one of them get into a car and drive away towards a dark alley. The whole thing left me very confused.

This will be my memory of Brunei. My first sighting of a prostitute, a "lady boy" no less. It's almost as exciting as my first sighting of an Orangutan!

Back in Malaysia now. In 3 days I start the diving portion of my trip. I am psyched -- nine dives over 3 days and then a 3 day river trip.

My hometown newspaper: sometimes, I really love it [Nov. 9th, 2009|10:52 pm]

libertarianism

[ghoststrider]
My newspaper is notorious for spelling errors, having the bulk of its writing come from the AP, and not, in general, being that great a paper: except when it comes to editorials.

Read this and tell me if you think its libertarian or not.

Its from Upstate New York, right next door to the special election in NY-23 that recently played out. The variety of conservatism or Republicanism up there is not at all like the stuff you hear from Rush Limbaugh. Sure, they're Christian, and they're conservative--but the majority believe its not their place to judge gays, there are exceptions to being pro-life (well, at least my mom holds that view), and in general, the government should not be telling people who to marry or run their bedrooms. Its far more libertarian than conservative, although it definitely has a cultural conservative tint to it. Maybe "paleolibertarian" is the word. I was particularly enthused by this paper also bashing Republicans and Conservatives (which are a very large third party in New York State.)

Well, anyways, I thought you might get embolded by seeing at least one paper that was embracing libertarian rhetoric. At least some of the media has gotten the message.

The time had finally arrived for him to acknowledge her brothers as family. He didn't feel rushed. He stared at the strapping young men and suddenly felt as though he were in the presence of giants. He was both humbled and in awe of them.

They were God's answer to his prayers. All those years of anguish and terror, in the dark hours of the night when desolation threatened to devour his very soul, he had prayed for a miracle.

And all along God had already given him four.

He had been truly blessed. He had a wonderful daughter, a noble son-in-law, and now...

"It appears I have four sons."

atheism

[jimi45]
Yay!

Lookit!

It's Conservapedia's entry on Atheism!

Highlights of this Wise and Wonderful Article:

On Attempts to Dilute the Definition of Atheism:

"Charles Bradlaugh, in 1876, proposed that atheism does not assert 'there is no God,' and by doing so he diluted the traditional definition of atheism. Since 1979, many atheists have followed Bradlaugh's thinking further and stated that atheism is merely a lack of belief in any god. The motive for such a shift in meaning appears to be to an attempt to shift the burden of proof regarding the existence of God to the theism side."

Goodness, the audacity, shifting the burden of proof like that!

On Atheists in America and Charity:

"Concerning the issue of atheism and uncharitableness, the evidence indicates that per capita charitable giving by atheists and agnostics in America is significantly less than by theists, according to a study by the Barna Group: 'The typical no-faith American donated just $200 in 2006, which is more than seven times less than the amount contributed by the prototypical active-faith adult ($1500).'"

Three guesses what kind of organization the Barna Group is--and the first two don't count.

Sometimes I grow too thin to think,
almost invisible, a thread blown into
the gutter, or out into an open field:
a gleaming strand of beautiful long hair
carried in the beak of a swallow, to weave
into her nest; thin as the highest
violin string, trembling that note
just at the edge of our silence—

---from The Main Course by Michael Hettich

Now your nose; that I could eat,
like a pretty little Swedish meatball
lost in a saucepan after dinner. Alone
stacking dishes, who could resist
biting softly and tasting the coriander,
salt, and honey; remembering
the delight of eating when hungry?

The Picture of You with Lettuce on Your Head by Jeff Green

nanojoumo- purity

I get a kick out of all the online "purity" groups. SO when the word purity came up for nanojoumo day 2 I had to lampoon it. The purity "logo" was put online as a purity card for a church gorup. It looks far cooler here than it did on the card. I pulled the card in to MS Publisher, reversed it and resized it to be about 8x10, i then printed it off onto a sheet of transparency film. I put it on the right side of the film this time and used a great deal of matte medium to transfer it to the pages.I had to cut it into 2 pieces to get it on, and I'll tell you the fold was a beast. the original logo was clearly going for a "urban and graf" feel. So the tendency of the transfer to peel and not go completely was a perfect medium to really take it there. I then outlined the letters with my pentouch pen, pressed down to get dribbles and runs. While that dried I looked at hundreds of images of scantily clad women bent over various objects, and quite frankly there are things that can't be unseen. Just the very act of attempting to find the image for the right corner has left my brain irreparably damaged. The things I do for art. I found the perfect picture, of a woman, scantily clad washing a car. I wanted the legs to frame the corner, so I first drew the leg for the right most side in soft pencil, added the crotch area and then the left leg. Next was to mix up some white person flesh tone and layer it over the drawing. I added her thong and it's all set. I blocked in some green coloring to set off the legs. Then I mixed up some gesso really thin and used a liner brush to spatter it on the page...

Maybe not the most pure purity page, but it's exactly what popped into my head when I first saw the word as the prompt.
